Join Ribble Steam Railway and Museum to mark fifty years since the end of mainline steam on British Railways in 1968.

Following the 1955 Modernisation Plan, British Railways begun to heavily invest in diesel and electric locomotives, phasing out steam on the national rail network. The change mirrored a shift in traditional industries, as ‘heavy’ industry begun to decline and those that remained prosperous moved to the roads. In 1960, British Railways built their last steam locomotive, named ‘Evening Star’, in Swindon and by the late 1960s only small areas of steam operation remained. In 1968, the curtain finally fell when the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’, BR’s last steam hauled train, ran between Liverpool, Manchester and Carlisle on August 11th. From then, it was up to industrial and heritage railways to keep up the steam mantle, which the former did until 1990 and the latter continues successfully today.
