Anniversary of Steamport Southport opening to the public in 1974
On Spring Bank Holiday weekend 1974, the newly established Steamport Southport opened it’s doors to the public after securing a lease on the former Southport Engine Shed, and restoring key infrastructure & building a collection of Locomotives, Carriages, Buses & Trams.
The museum operated in the nearby seaside resort for almost 25 years before the majority of the rail based collection was moved to our site on Preston Docks.
Without the fantastic efforts of the original society members, the basis of the collection at Ribble Steam Railway, together with the infrastructure and operations on site would not have been possible.
During this event, we will be displaying images & artefacts from the “Steamport” Era – and if any former members or volunteers are able to loan any photographs or videos for viewing during the event we would be delighted to see them.
If you were part of the Steamport or Southport Railway Centre volunteer workforce, or even if you remember visiting the site, we’d love to see you & hear any stories or reflections. We really hope as many of you can make it!
Trains will run hourly from the main museum platform from 11:00 to 15:00, hauled by our own “Courageous” – Bagnall 2680
