But at night\, when the stations were quiet and silver moonlight shone on the tracks\, Helga saw something no other train could see. \nGhosts. \nThey weren’t frightening ghosts. They were pale and shimmery\, like mist in the morning. \nOne chilly night\, Helga rolled into an empty station and saw five ghostly passengers waiting on the platform. \n“Tickets\, please!” called her driver. \nBut the driver couldn’t see them. \nHelga gave a friendly toot-toot! \nThe ghosts smiled and climbed aboard. \nAs Helga rattled through the dark countryside\, the ghosts whispered happily together. One wore an old-fashioned hat\, another carried a tiny suitcase\, and a little ghost girl waved at the owls in the trees. \nAt last\, Helga reached an abandoned station deep in the woods. \nThe ghosts stepped onto the platform. \n“Thank you\, Helga\,” said the oldest ghost. “We’ve been waiting a very long time for our train home.” \nOne by one\, they faded into sparkling moonlight. \nHelga felt warm inside her engine. \nFrom then on\, whenever Helga travelled the Moonlight Railway\, she watched carefully at every lonely station. \nSometimes there were no passengers at all. \nAnd sometimes\, standing quietly in the mist\, there was someone only Helga could see. \nWhenever that happened\, she always stopped. \nToot-toot! \nBecause Helga knew that everyone deserved a ride home.
