Helga’s Halloween Story

Helga was a little green diesel train who worked on the Moonlight Railway.

By day, she carried families, parcels, and sleepy commuters. But at night, when the stations were quiet and silver moonlight shone on the tracks, Helga saw something no other train could see.

Ghosts.

They weren’t frightening ghosts. They were pale and shimmery, like mist in the morning.

One chilly night, Helga rolled into an empty station and saw five ghostly passengers waiting on the platform.

“Tickets, please!” called her driver.

But the driver couldn’t see them.

Helga gave a friendly toot-toot!

The ghosts smiled and climbed aboard.

As Helga rattled through the dark countryside, the ghosts whispered happily together. One wore an old-fashioned hat, another carried a tiny suitcase, and a little ghost girl waved at the owls in the trees.

At last, Helga reached an abandoned station deep in the woods.

The ghosts stepped onto the platform.

“Thank you, Helga,” said the oldest ghost. “We’ve been waiting a very long time for our train home.”

One by one, they faded into sparkling moonlight.

Helga felt warm inside her engine.

From then on, whenever Helga travelled the Moonlight Railway, she watched carefully at every lonely station.

Sometimes there were no passengers at all.

And sometimes, standing quietly in the mist, there was someone only Helga could see.

Whenever that happened, she always stopped.

Toot-toot!

Because Helga knew that everyone deserved a ride home.
