“Energy” is the new name for loco MSC DH23 – The Sentinel used to work on the Manchester Ship Canal, and was purchased in early 2004, and arrived on site on 22nd March of that year to provide backup to the existing fleet of locos running the freight business.
The loco was fitted with multiple working equipment, retrospectively fitted in 1971 – where it was permanently coupled to sister loco DH24. This equipment needed to be removed in order to bring the loco into service. The loco was repainted into Ribble Rail livery. The loco can occasionally be seen operating the Bitumen traffic.
Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd was a British company based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire that made steam-powered lorries, railway locomotives, and later, diesel engined lorries and locomotives.
The prototype Sentinel diesel locomotive was built and ready to commence trials early in 1959. It met with the approval and before the end of the year 17 locomotives had been sold and delivered. The company was ready to produce a maximum of four locomotives a month. By 1963 four different Sentinel diesel models were being produced. These Sentinels demonstrated their suitability for heavy work.
