Peckett 1935 of 1937 “Hornet” being prepared for formal Steam Test

Hornet is the sole surviving member of the Peckett “Greenhithe” class, with a lowered footplate & cab for working under restricted loading gauges – and was a static exhibit at Steamport Southport for many years after being rescued from industry in 1983, when she moved from Bersham Colliery near Wrexham.

In the past few years, the locomotive has been undergoing a significant restoration to working order – and although the locomotive worked in industry until quite late, 1980, the jobs list has been significant to return her to steam.

After passing a hydraulic boiler examination in Autumn 2024, 25th January saw the first warming fire in the locomotive as a completed unit in almost 45 years – and over the course of the next few weeks, further in-house tests will be undertaken before a formal boiler examination can be undertaken in steam, meaning she can once again operate trains, and possibly for the first time in her 88 year life, hauling passengers.
